Carcassing Timber
|
Carcassing Timber The phrase carcassing is normally used to refer to timbers processed for use in structural applications, for example roof battens, floor joists and studwork for partitioned walls. Carcassing timbers are normally machined to specific sizes, with permitted deviations, and pressure treated according to their planned usage within a building. Southern Timber carry a wide range and large quantities of carcassing timbers from 19mm x 38mm battens to 100mm x 200mm structural timber sections. Extensive yard stock allows us to deliver from our Ipplepen, Newton Abbot base throughout Torbay, Teignbridge & the South Hams to Exeter & Plymouth districts and to many other parts of Devon & Cornwall. Almost all carcassing is now imported, usually from the Baltic States and Scandinavia, the majority is regularized, kiln dried and graded at the sawmills to BS4978 strength classes C16 and C24. All carcassing is pressure treated, usually with Tanalith E, to a minimum Hazard Class 2 to minimize any deterioration from damp buildings or where used externally. This range is supplemented with full sized, regularized timbers from Canada and local and other home-grown kiln-dried and graded stock. Other standard timber sizes can be obtained depending on specification, quantity and timescales involved. Where renovations and complex construction projects may require non-standard timbers these can be machined at an associated mill and graded by Southern Timber’s TRADA certificated visual stress grader. Wherever possible all carcassing timber is sourced from FSC and PEFC suppliers and we are currently working towards achieving a full chain of custody. |
