Carcassing Timber

Carcassing Timber

At Southern Timber we use the term ‘carcassing’ to include the smallest sawn timber section of 19mm x 38mm batten, through regularised structural 175mm timbers up to special order sections of 250mm x 250mm larch. Most of our carcassing timbers are destined to be used in timber frame buildings, for stud and partition walls, roof structures and floor joists.

The majority of our timbers are pressure treated, the structural timbers are stress graded and regularised in size. Carcassing timbers are machined to specific sizes, within permitted tolerances, and then pressure treated according to their planned usage within a building.

We offer next day delivery, when required, for our normal delivery days (Monday to Friday) and areas. Customers are requested to phone in before 1.00 pm on the day prior to delivery with their complete product listing, delivery address and payment details.

Extensive yard stock allows us to deliver from our Ipplepen, Newton Abbot base throughout Torbay, Teignbridge & the South Hams to Exeter & Plymouth districts and to many other parts of Devon & Cornwall.

Softwood Battens

Softwood Battens

All our battens are now imported from the Baltic, or Scandinavia, because they are stronger and of more consistent quality than the home-grown battens. Roofing standards are quite specific as to the sizes of batten required depending on rafter centres and the proposed roofing materials. All Southern Timber battens are pressure treated to minimise any deterioration from damp roof voids and external usage.

Carcassing - 25mm timbers

Carcassing - 25mm timbers

Most 22mm timber carcassing is home grown and used for cladding or fencing applications. These are fast grown timber from the forests of Scotland, Wales, Ireland and even Cornwall. All of our 22mm timbers are pressure treated with Tanalith E, or similar, timber preservative and it is strongly recommended that any cross cuts are treated with two coats of Ensele end-grain preservative treatment.

Carcassing - 38mm timbers

Carcassing - 38mm timbers

At Southern Timber we still keep a stock of 38mm timber in widths of 150mm (approx. 6”), 200mm (approx. 8”) and 225mm (approx. 9”) No longer used in house construction these tanalised boards are useful for where 22mm isn’t sufficiently strong enough in an agricultural or domestic situation. They are also useful as a rustic deckboard or for an external stair tread.

Carcassing - 50mm timbers

Carcassing - 50mm timbers

All house builds, extensions and loft conversions seem to require large quantities of 50mm timbers for floor joists, studwork and roofing timbers. Wherever possible our 50mm timbers are imported from Scandinavian or the Baltic States because of the timber’s quality. Large stocks of Tanalith E pressure treated timber carcassing are kept of popular sections and lengths up to 6.0 metres for most section sizes.

Carcassing - 75mm timbers

Carcassing - 75mm timbers

Most of our 75mm timber is from Scandinavian or the Baltic States. These imported timbers grow slower than home-grown stocks, thus offering greater dimensional stability, they can be graded to C16 or even C24 and also provide a better machined finish. They are kiln dried and then machine graded at the sawmills to BS4978 strength classes, timbers are normally regularised to produce boards with consistent dimensions.

Carcassing - CLS timbers

Carcassing - CLS timbers

CLS is regularised and finished with eased edges to provide a timber of consistent size for accurate studwork and timber framing. CLS stands for ‘Canadian Lumber System’, originally imported from Canada most CLS now comes from Scandinavia or the Baltic. Stocked in untreated and tanalised, lengths 2.4 & 4.8 metres in packs of mixed C16 and C24 structural grades. Our original regularised, semi-planed timber.

Carcassing - large sections

Carcassing - large sections

We can supply large sections of Douglas fir, larch and green oak machined for bespoke buildings. These timbers are cut to order depending on what size logs are available at the mill, usually 300mm - 450mm widths can be supplied with lengths up to 8.5 metres. Where required these timbers can be pressure treated with Tanalith E. This image shows Douglas Fir from Longleat that was machined for our Ipplepen Office
