Newel Posts
Newel Posts
There are three main varieties of planed newel posts – 4RC, turned and beaded newels. The 4RC posts are planed redwood with rounded corners (hence 4RC) and are supplied as 75mm 100mm and 150mm square posts. Each decking install has its own requirements but the usual choice would be the 100mm x 100mm because the moulded handrails & baserails are dimensionally designed to match this sized post. The 4RC posts are stocked in a variety of lengths up to 4.8 metres allowing them to be used on elevated decks and for cutting down to size.Turned newel posts provide a more traditional looking balustrade finish, they are available in 1.3 metre lengths which means that in elevated decks they would have to be bolted to the joists because there is not enough length for digging in.
Beaded newels feature a squared profile with two lines of detail routed out at the top of the post and a truncated pointed top – they present an attractive alternative to square posts but again they are only available in 1.3 metre length.
All decks over 600mm high require a spindle height of 1.1 metres, so neither turned or beaded newels would be long enough in these instances – use 4RC post lengths instead.
