Balustrade and spindles
Balustrade and spindles
Balustrade installations normally use the moulded redwood hand and base rail which are rebated for 41mm spindles to put the finishing touches to your deck. All the balustrading is tanalised with a smooth planed finish.Softwood spindles are available as straight in 0.9m and 1.1 metre lengths, turned spindles are available as 0.9 metres. While turned spindles are attractive they can look fussy if over used, however, they are very effective for breaking up long runs of square spindles – used as one turned for every three square spindles. Please note that any deck edges raised 600mm, or higher, than the ground should use 1.1 metre spindles to comply with building regulations.
An alternative spindle installation can be made using Southern Timber’s extensive range of planed timbers. Long lengths of spindling, usually 3.6 metre are stocked in ex 38mm x 38mm (32mm finish size) and 50mm x 50mm (44mm finish size) which can be cut to length and used in an American style balustrade. With 38mm spindling this would normally use 47mm x 100mm CLS for handrail and baserail; with 50mm it is more normal to use bigger sections such as the 38mm x 125mm smooth PSE boards.
