Featheredge cladding
Featheredge cladding
Feather-edge boards are formed by sawing a rectangular section at an angle, resulting in two sections tapered across the width. Featheredge boards provide a traditional, rural looking product that is ideal for many cladding applications in a rural setting. When used for cladding the boards are normally laid horizontally, with a vertical overlap of approx. 25mm for 150mm width and 38mm for wider boards. Although any length featheredge board could be used for cladding the boards chosen for this purpose are normally 3.0m, 3.6m or 4.8 metres in length (approx. 10’. 12’ and 16’ respectively).
Feather-edge boards are supplied green, or unseasoned with a sawn finish and it is important to plan for dimensional shrinkage and movement of these timbers. Boards may shrink during the first two to three years when the wood dries and if exposed to hot, dry weather, before or soon after fitting, some boards are likely to cup, warp and split. To minimise any movement they should be fastened at a maximum of 600mm centres
