Hit and miss

A fence that combines some of the best qualities of featheredge and palisade fences. There are several variations with hit-and-miss fencing but normally constructed by nailing square-edged 25mm boards on either side of horizontal timber rails. The vertical boards present a sturdy fence and by leaving spaces between the boards it allows the wind to pass between the boards without exerting too much pressure on the fence structure.

Because of the variety of sizes of posts, rails and square edged boards it is possible to produce a fence to suit most requirements - variations in height, length and line in a fence run. Sometimes a horizontal gravelboard is used at the bottom of the fence to protect against mower & strimmer damage, soil creep and also provides more options for the height of the fence.

The most popular install of this type of fence is with 150mm width boards at 1.8 metre length. These boards are spaced 150mm apart for a normal fence, or 100mm where more privacy is required, and then boards are affixed to the other side of the rail over the corresponding gaps. Adding a gravel board to the bottom would bring the effective height of the fence up to 1.95 metres.
