At Southern Timber we carry a range of planed and treated timber with eased edges, we often refer to this as 4RC (four round corners). These timbers are primarily intended for balustrading, pergola and gazebo construction.
Planed posts, or newel posts, can be made by cutting our long lengths of planed eased edge square section timbers. When cut if these posts are in ground contact then only the factory treated end is to be used for this purpose. The cut end should be treated with Ensele preservative, if it can also be capped with a timber rail that should also help to increase its service life.
The ex-75mm x 75mm makes an attractive posts for trellis & lattice panels but is slightly too narrow for the rebated hand & base rails. Our 100mm x 100mm sections are popular for the rebated hand & base rails, for pergolas and elevated deck supports. The 75mm posts usually finish at 70mm x 70mm and the 100mm post lengths finish at approximately 95mm x 95mm. Normal stock lengths for the 75mm 4RC are 2.4 metres and 3.6, or 3.9 metres subject to availability. The 100mm 4RC sections are normally 3.6/3.9 metres and 4.8/5.1 metre sections depending on availability.
A range of galvanised, elevated post supports from Simpson Strongtie, amongst others is also available
