Redwood pine flooring boards represent an affordable solid floor option. These traditional floor boards are imported from Scandinavia as sawn and kiln-dried blanks, then they are machined and planed in England. When the boards have been fitted and finished, with a hard-wax these boards look very attractive and will wear well in comparison to a carpeted surface. However, it must be remembered that pine boards are softwood and not as durable as a hardwood.
Board lengths and coverage
These floorboards are supplied tongue and grooved on the two long sides and are referred to as ex-150mm width. When working out your square meterage requirements please make an allowance for waste of at least 5%-10%. When calculating the amount of flooring required then use a board cover width of 132mm.
Stock lengths are normally 3.6 metres and 4.8 metres but other lengths occasionally find their way from Scandinavia into the Southern Timber store! It is standard practice at the mill that they can substitute the nearest length to what is ordered, an order for 3.6 metres often yields 3.9 metre lengths at an extra cost as well. The sawn flooring blanks are supplied at a nominal 25mm (aka ex-25mm) and after machining their finished size is 20mm thick.
Adjusting to conditions for laying
Although all our softwood floor boards are kiln-dried at source and are around 10%-12% moisture content when they leave the factory it is very important to ensure the boards are conditioned for use. The boards should only be stored in the property after all wet trades have finished and any plastered surfaces are dried.
To minimise movement in the boards it is recommended that the boards are stored on-site for at least 14 days prior to laying. Temperature is very important and the boards should be allowed to adjust gradually to the prevailing conditions within the room where they will be fitted.
Finishing the boards
We prefer a hard wax finish for flooring, it is easy to apply and maintain, it is also easy to spot repair. Applying hard wax oil, whether Treatex or Osmo branded, should not be attempted in low temperatures. The room temperature should ideally be above 12°C, preferably 18-20°, it is also important to apply ‘just enough’, so a clean, new brush is recommended. Rollers are quick but it is very easy to over apply the product, this will increase drying times and will not produce the best appearance.
Traditional polyurethane varnish finishes on pine floor can lead to an unwelcome “yellow” effect, Both Treatex and Osmo have developed a special finish (Treatex Natural and Osmo Raw) to produce a more natural, lighter finish to counteract this yellowing effect.
