Solid oak flooring is imported in bulk packs of kiln-dried sawn boards, the blanks are approximately 25mm thick and of variable width. They are then machined into Tongue and Groove boards here in England. After machining the planed oak boards are 20mm thick and board lengths typically vary between 2.1 and 3.6 metres. Board widths are standardised as listed below.
Appearance of the oak boards
Oak is very durable and the boards usually display a variety of figuring and colour. Character grade boards contain a few small knots, and a few will contain larger rustic knots that may require filling, we stock water based fillers from Osmo.
When calculating the number of boards required allowances must be made for wastage particularly if you wish to cut the boards to eliminate the larger knots. Most projects feature a waste allowance of 5%-10%
The overall colour of the heartwood is a light but warm brown, but lighter sapwood and some mineral colour may also be found. Timber is a natural product, each board is unique and the overall effect of boards should display a random scattering of knots with some colour variation.
Preparation for installation
These oak boards are kiln dried down to 8% - 10% to minimise movement, but after delivery to site it is recommended that the boards are stored on-site for at least 14 days prior to laying. It is most important that all wet-trades, especially plastering, have finished before the boards are brought into the same building
How the boards are secured will largely depend on the substrate – joists, chipboard or concrete screed but also upon the installer’s personal preferences. We keep SikaBond adhesives, Pro Vent underlay, Tongue-Tite screws and a selection of other fixings in stock to make installation easier. Matching American oak skirting, architrave and mouldings are kept in a variety of machined profiles.
Our Oak flooring stocks are complemented with a range of accessories: SikaBond adhesives, Treatex hard wax oils and ogee, torus & bulnose skirting. Once laid the boards can be finished with Treatex Hard-Wax Oil or Osmo Polyx wood treatments. Both ranges feature clear matt and satin finishes along with a selection of colour tints.
We maintain stocks of solid oak flooring in the following widths: 115mm; 140mm; 165mm; 190mm and 215mm. Stock levels will fluctuate but fresh deliveries are normally no more than 14 days away.
Other hardwood flooring
Most oak board production has moved over to engineered flooring. We can however get pre-finished and unfinished oak boards to order if you require something very specific. Other solid floors may feature distressed finishes for renovation projects or to match existing floors in extensions in older properties.
