Southern Timber has been providing charitable donations to the local community since the business was formed in 2000. Starting with help for local events, Ipplepen Carnival, this involvement has spread further to include national initiatives such as Macmillan Cancer Relief & Movember, and also some overseas funding.
Devon Charity – Abbfest
Abbfest Festival is run by a Charitable Trust and is a celebration of Devon Food and Drink which takes place in September each year at Fermoys Garden Centre, Ipplepen, Newton Abbot, Devon. All profits are distributed between local charities – in 2010, over £17,000 was distributed.
At Abbfest almost every beer in Devon is available and there are approximately 60 food and craft stalls to enjoy each year along with cookery demonstrations, family entertainment and lots of live music to keep the whole family entertained.
Abbfest has raised over £100,000 in the last 10 years
Macmillan Cancer Support
Macmillan Cancer Support helps improve the lives of people affected by cancer – and there are currently 2 million people living with cancer in the UK.
One in three of us will get cancer and for most it will be the toughest thing we ever face. When you’re facing the toughest fight of your life, Macmillan provide medical, emotional, practical and financial support and push for a better cancer care system.
The Macmillan coffee morning is Macmillan’s biggest fundraising event and Southern Timber welcome donations on the day, our contributions to Macmillan in 2013 were over £330, 2014 over £430 and in 2015 we raised over £1,000.
Many of our products are from overseas and since 2009 we have provided funding for a school project in the Gambia and sponsoring a child through Plan-UK.
We are currently sponsoring Youa, an 8 year old girl living in Laos through Plan-UK. They have been working with children for over 70 years.
Donations are pooled to fund projects such as digging a well to provide clean water, building schools and training teachers etc. The local children are involved in deciding, planning and carrying out these projects.
