Cedar cladding, longer service life
Timber cladding, along with fibre cement, has become increasingly popular at the expense of uPVC weatherboarding. Many new builds have moved from heavier brick & block structures towards lightweight timber frame constructed houses and apartments. More bespoke buildings and extensions tend to utilise durable timbers such as western red cedar which need no painting and still enjoy a longer service life.
Cedar responding to changes in design
More buildings are making use of Western Red Cedar for cladding upper elevations, or single storey extensions. Cladding in the UK has been for relatively-flush panels, but more adventurous profiles are being requested along with an increase in board-on-board style designs.
Bespoke cedar slatted fence
One project on the edges of Dartmoor wanted a bespoke cedar fence, slatted to allow the wind through but still provide a degree of privacy from the neighbours. Long life Permaposts were dried and then faced with cedar produced in the mill at the same time as the cedar slats and cover strips.
Cedar finishes and Osmo UV Oils
Cedar is often selected because of it’s long service life, but remember it weathers to silver-grey, like all other untreated durable timbers. When designing and building a bespoke project with cedar it is important to remember that it is much easier to treat and maintain the colour than rejuvenate after weathering.
