Product Details
At Southern Timber we carry a range of timbers which can be cross-cut to produce smooth planed posts. These long timbers match our range of planed and treated redwood with eased edges. We often refer to these timbers as 4RC (four round corners). We mainly use quality redwood stock to produce these timbers. They are primarily intended for decking, balustrading, pergola and gazebo construction.
Posts options 75mm and 100mm
The ex-75mm x 75mm timber make an attractive smooth planed posts option for trellis & lattice panels. These timbers finish at approximately 70mm which is slightly too narrow for the rebated hand & base rails. They can be used with smooth planed ex 32mm x 100mm boards and 32mm x 32mm spindling to make an American style balustrading. Both the 75mm and 100mm timbers are treated to user class UC4, therefore they can be dug into the ground. This is usually for decking installations, They can also be used for posts when installing pale fences and for supporting diamond lattice panels. Normally machined from 5th grade Scandinavian redwood. We also have beaded newels available in 1.25 metre and 2.4 metre lengths
The 100mm planed posts finish at approximately 94mm x 94mm, therefore making them ideal for the handrail/baserail and rebated spindle system. Because of their larger size they are therefore better suited to support structures than the 75mm smooth planed posts
Smooth Planed Posts – lengths available
Our 100mm x 100mm sections are significantly larger in cross section. They are approximately 94mm x 94mm and they are popular for the rebated hand and rebated base rails. They are often used for garden pergolas and for elevated deck supports. Normally machined from unsorted (1st-3rd) grade German whitewood
- 75 x 75 planed eased edges, tanalised, usually 2.4 metre and 3.6 metre options
- 100 x 100 planed eased edges, tanalised, usually 3.6 metre and 4.8 metre options
Using with spindles
The ex 38mm x 38mm planed timbers are ideal for spindles, and they are normally supplied in 3.6 metre or 3.9 metre lengths. Finished sizes are approx. 32mm x 32mm and is the same thickness as our popular premier deckboards. Therefore they can also be used for edging or decorative effect in a deck surface.
Our ex 38mm x 125mm smooth board is used primarily as a smooth deckboard. However it could also be utilised as a handrail over the top of our ex-100mm planed posts. It can also be used to frame grooved decking areas, or for the edges on multi-level decks to emphasise the change in height.
