A herringbone strut is fixed diagonally between joists from the top of one joist to the bottom of the next. Herringbone struts gives support and stability between joists helping to prevent joists twisting. Therefore makes the timber frame much more rigid and reduces the chance of flexing. Herringbone struts give superior bracing strength over traditional slow and costly timber noggins. Screws could be used to fix them in places although square twist nails are most commonly used to secure struts.
