38mm Stocks are home grown
Demand for 38mm timbers has decreased, because new buildings are specified with a minimum of 47mm for joists and studwork. Baltic and Scandinavian mills generally cut structural timbers, so most 38mm timber carcassing is home (UK) grown. There is still demand from agricultural and domestic applications for 38mm timbers, we consider this product to be one of our agricultural timbers. Because most timber is now being regularised these boards actually finish at 36mm thickness.
Regularised agricultural timbers
At Southern Timber we keep 36mm/38mm thick sawn timber in three widths 150mm, 200mm and 225mm (approx. 6″, 8″ & 9″). They have a rustic appearance but are smoother than previous stock.
These tanalised boards provide a useful decking board where customers want a more ‘rustic’ appearance than provided by planed boards. The boards are often utilised as ridge boards in pitched roof constructions, they can also be used for cladding the sides of a larger timber shed where any movement in the board width can be tolerated. They can be used for cladding when other agricultural timbers such as Yorkshire boarding (22mm thick) aren’t quite substantial enough
These timbers are not treated, or intended, for use in ground contact, but treated for where the timber may be subjected to the risk of wetting from rain. If however the boards are used in ground contact such as a raised vegetable or flower bed then make sure that water can drain away from the bottom of the raised bed, this will help to increase the board’s service life. As with all tanalised timber the service life of the board can be increased by the application of a water repellent.
Timbers all pressure treated with preservative
These timbers are all pressure treated with Tanalith E, or similar, timber preservative. It is vital that any cross cuts are treated with two coats of Ensele end-grain preservative treatment.
