SterlingOSB Zero, or Sterling OSB3, is the "new" name for OSB 3. We also stock 9mm OSB, 11mm OSB3, 18mm OSB3 and 18mm OSB3 T&G boards.
OSB 3 (OSB3) is an engineered wood-based sheet material. OSB3 has many of the benefits of a structural ply - ideal in timber frame extensions, timber structures and general construction. Also available as 9mm OSB, 11mm OSB and 18mm T&G OSB3. because the wood strands are compressed under high pressure there are no voids or delaminating problems. At Southern Timber we stock SmartPly and Norboard structural OSB.
It is best described as an engineered ply where strands of wood are bonded together with a synthetic resin adhesive. The outer layers of these panels show how the strands are orientated in a particular direction.
Engineered product benefits over Ply
Timbers used in OSB 3 manufacture include both softwoods (spruce, pine) and hardwood (aspen). After drying the timber flakes are sprayed with a synthetic resin which provides some moisture resistance to the board. OSB-3 is produced so that each sheet is of uniform thickness, 18mm OSB is 18mm thick. In comparison 18mm ply can be +/- 1mm which means 18mm ply could be 17mm or even 19mm thick. OSB will not normally be attacked by wood-boring insects common in temperate climates. However, like other sheet materials, it can be susceptible to fungal attack under prolonged wet conditions. Timber frame structures should have a breathable membrane applied as soon as practical. Much of the OSB sold in the UK is manufactured in the UK, or Ireland, using homegrown timbers.
High performance sheet products
OSB is designed for use where a high performance board is required. It provides dimensional stability and load bearing capabilities. Strong, consistent and great value, this engineered board is stronger and tougher than most softwood plywood. Strength is thanks to the tens of thousands of real wood strands that go into every board. OSB boards are of uniform thickness with no knots, voids or delaminating problems. Traditionally we have carried OSB2, but now we keep OSB3 which is conditioned for humid conditions. OSB is sometimes referred to as SterlingBoard, but this is a brand name of an established manufactured board.
Uses for OSB-3 sheet material
All OSB boards are easy to saw, drill, nail, plane, file or sand. Nails can be driven as close as 8mm from the panel edge without splitting this sheet material. Typical applications for OSB would include timber frame housing, site hoarding, flat and pitch roofing, wall sheathing, flooring, sheds and stables and panelling. Other uses include shelving and racking, boarding up, garden sheds, packaging, pallets and DIY projects.
