Treated UC4

UC4 treated timber is wood that has been through a complex tanalised pressure treatment process to render it resilient to environmental conditions. This reduces its likelihood of succumbing to rot, and dampness and improves its ability to last for a long time when in permanent contact with the ground outside.

Most timber frames sit at ground level, or just above it. To get the best service life from your timber it should be UC4 treated, with good air circulation, and preferably away from ground contact. Our UC4 treated timber and UC4 treated sleepers are incised and treated for longevity.

Timber used for UC4 Joists

Home-grown (ie.British) spruce is used for the incising of some decking joists, UC4 treated sleepers and decking boards. Home grown spruce grades to C16 The timbers are kiln dried and monitored to reduce the product’s moisture level. When everything is in order the timbers, which are in vacuum tanks, are flooded with preservatives.

Best practices for UC4 timber

Standard carcassing timber is normally UC2, not a problem for projects where the timber will only experience occasional wetting until the building is watertight. However, if you have a timber-framed building where the timbers are likely to be in ground contact then UC4 timber should be used.  Whatever grade you use, any cut ends must be treated with a recognised end-grain treatment.

For this reason, UC4 treated sleepers are ideally suited to making raised vegetable beds or garden retainers; in fact, our range of pressure treated UC4 timber is ideally suited to all your outdoor landscaping projects, What's more, all our UC4 treated sleepers come with an attractive 15-year warranty for your peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Timber graded UC4 (USE Class 4) should not be confused with C24, they are not the same thing. The abbreviation UC4 relates to the level of timber preservative, whereas C24 relates to the structural grade of timber. By specifying these grades in a timber structure, the structural engineer can help control the strength and suitability for the purpose of the planned building.

UC3, also known as Use Class 3, indicates timber that has been treated with a moderate level of protection against bacteria and harmful insects. However, if the timber is intended for ground contact, then the timber would need upgrading to UC4, aka Use Class 4. The UC4 timbers undergo a more stringent treatment process, including more time in preservative treatment.

The longevity of UC4 timber will depend on a combination of factors, but the anticipated minimum service life for UC4 timber is 15 years. This minimum level is monitored by the Wood Preservation Association (WPA) and they take into account the steps followed by manufacturers to achieve this objective. Some of the factors the WPA takes into account include the timber species used, the amount of preservative penetration and whether other treatments are administered after processing.

UC4 is a standard for treated timber that indicates which timbers are suitable for external use and can also be used in direct contact with the ground. The most widely used UC4 timber products are fencing and gate posts. Typically UC4 (Use Class 4) treatment includes more time spent kiln-drying the timber before pressure treatment with timber preservative. Another indicator of UC4 grade is the achievement of a minimum 6mm penetration of the sapwood.
