Sawn or smooth planed posts?

Sawn posts are normally the lowest price option but 15 Year Warranty posts might be more economical in the longer run.  Sawn 100 x 100mm posts are available at 1.8 metre, 2.4 metre and 3.0 metre lengths for fencing and match well with 38mm x 88mm rails (featheredge fence rails).  Sawn 22mm x 150mm gravel boards are an economical way to increase the life of a fence.

Smooth planed posts make a good match for round top pale fences, 75mm is ideal for 600mm, 900mm and even 1200mm pales.  CLS 38mm rails at 4.8 metres then complement the other planed timbers. Post Crete, Creocote and a box of screws would come in handy too.

Sawn timber sizes and pressure treatment

We keep large stocks of 25mm and 38mm sawn timbers. These timbers are most suitable for rustic fencing and cladding, non-structural applications.  These boards are usually cut from fast growing trees from UK forests.  Most 25mm carcassing has a finished thickness of 22mm, the 38mm is approximately 35mm

All of these sawn timbers are pressure treated with Tanalith or similar timber preservative. These timbers are intended for use above the ground level, any cross-cuts must be treated with end-grain preservative treatment.

Timber finish and appearance

The timber will be unspecified softwood and there may be colour variation between boards even from the same pack. Boards will ultimately fade to grey but if colour variation is a problem then they can be stained.
