Sawn Treated

Sawn Treated

Sawn Timber stocks

We maintain large stocks of sawn timber boards in Devon. Demand is still high for low-price products suitable for non-structural fencing and cladding applications. Boards are usually cut from fast growing trees here in UK forests. Most sawn timber may appear undersized because 3mm is lost during machining: 25mm sawn usually finishes at 22mm, while the 38mm is approximately 35mm thick.  Our most popular sawn products are 25mm sawn batten and 25mm x 150mm gravel boards.

Tanalised timber and pressure treatment

Our stock sawn timbers are pressure treated with Tanalith or similar timber preservative. These timbers are intended for use above the ground level, this is to improve product service life.  Any cross-cuts made during construction must be treated with end-grain preservative treatment.

Sawn Timber finish and appearance

Supplied timber will be unspecified softwood, most usually Sitka spruce. There may be colour variation between boards even from the same pack. Boards will ultimately fade to grey but if preferred the customer can stain the sawn timber boards earlier in their service life. These sawn timber boards are stored outdoors and at some times of the year the boards may be damp.

Yorkshire Boarding and Agricultural buildings

We maintain large stocks of 150mm width sawn timber for use in the agricultural industry. Popular for use as “Yorkshire boarding” in barns and livestock buildings, stock lengths include 1.8m, 3.0m, 3.6m, 4.2m and 4.8 metres. Deliveries are made daily through much of Devon and Cornwall using our own transport.

Frequently Asked Questions

The preferred timbers for outdoor use are pressure treated spruce. The degree of treatment is dictated by the potential exposure to moisture during the stages of building. However, if the building is planned for a more rural location, then sawn, ungraded timber (but pressure treated) would be an excellent alternative.

Treated sawn timber grade C16 and C24, can be used outdoors providing it has been pressure treated. UC1, UC2 and UC3 timbers should withstand occasional wetting during construction but their main use is intended for use in a covered construction such as stables, timber frame extensions and standalone buildings. These are considered protected timber structures and typically include roofing felt, moisture resistant ply and timber cladding.

Tanalith timber and pressure treated timber are often confused with one another. Tanalith refers to one family of timber treatment types that includes Tanalith E; Tanalith MF and Tanalith Lifestyle. In practice most timber coming out of a treatment plant has been treated with Tanalith E! Pressure treated timbers have excess moisture removed and then been treated with timber preservatives – they might have been pressure-treated with Tanalith but the phrase “pressure treated” is not brand specific.

The lifespan of sawn treated timber is largely determined by the suitability of the timber for the desired application. A sawn 25mm thick timber should last 10-15 years if used for hit & miss fencing. However, if used incorrectly – say used as a post - the cladding timbers would probably last 2-3 years. They should be out of ground contact and supported with UC4 posts.
