1.22m (4ft) Chestnut Paling, *3 WIRE* 75mm/100mm spacing, 10 yard (9.14m) roll

Chestnut paling is a classic fencing product still in demand. Durable and versatile this niche product is traditional looking and eco-friendly.

Coppicing chestnut

These palings are made from coppiced chestnut – there are similarities with oak in both strength and durability. Coppicing of the chestnut woodland is usually based around a cropping cycle of approximately 18 - 20 years.

The pales are split along the length because a greater timber strength is achieved than by sawing through the timber. The pales look pale when first cut but will turn grey after a few months - this when they are at their hardest.

The chestnut pales are joined with galvanised wire at between 75mm and 100mm intervals. Each pale is secured with two wires and becomes part of a readymade fence. This is an English grown product and supplied in 9.1 metre rolls, in Imperial size that is 10 yards.

Installing chestnut pale fencing

The fence is normally supported with round posts at whatever spacing is appropriate, usually 6 to 8 feet. Post size will largely depend on the application – pales are often used with stabilising sand banks and dunes, so longer posts might be required to give the strength required.  Post rammers would probably be the favoured installation method. Other things being equal a roll would probably equate to 6 posts with approximately 1.8 metre spacing.  Ideal temporary fence, chestnut is very durable in wet, marshy conditions.
