What is Phenolic Plywood?

Phenolic plywood is a sheet material made of birch, poplar or eucalyptus plywood overlaid with multilayer phenol film. The number of veneers will depend on which ply thickness is chosen.  Sometimes the phenolic ply is smooth both sides, but more typically smooth one side and mesh the other. Our focus here is on the Phenolic Birch products (Eucalyptus is considered elsewhere)

Phenolic Plywood from Latvia to Devon?

All phenolic plywood sheets shold be edge-sealed using acrylic paint to reduce moisture ingress. These film-veneered plywood mesh boards have enhanced resistance to insects, fungi, moisture penetration and chemicals. Their surfaces are also smooth and easy to maintain.

To make mesh plywood, a phenolic resin-impregnated film is hard-pressed on both surfaces of the ply under intense temperature and pressure; smooth on one external face veneer and the textured pattern onto the other face. Typically, it is the resultant imprinted wire mesh pattern that enhances the slip-resistance characteristic of the mesh plywood.

Ouc  entry-level phenolic ply is normally sourced from China.  This lower-priced product is manufactured with a softwood interior.  In comparison  the Latvian phenolic birch plywood is stocked as a better-quality option. This Latvian ply uses higher quality birch for core veneers,  Out lowest price plys are normally constructed using eucalyptus, or poplar, .

Applications for Phenolic Plywood

Plywood mesh is quite versatile and can be used in various areas - mainly in applications that need surfaces highly resistant to wear and tear. As such, mesh plywood is preferred for transport applications such as trailer and truck flooring, ship decking, van flooring, train flooring, bus flooring, horseboxes, flight cases etc.

Other applications include joinery, formwork, furniture, shopfitting, interior design, industrial floors, and storage racks.
