We can supply large sections of green oak timbers machined to size depending on the customer’s specification. Oak log lengths will vary, the mills invariably work with green oak logs imported from France and log lengths usually vary between 3.6 metres and 7.2 metres.
Section sizes will depend on log availability, maximum widths tend to be between 250mm and 350mm. The oak logs are generally cut down to approximate sizes on the first saw and then finished on another machine. Most oak is fine sawn but some finishing will be required by the customer. When the oak sections are machined there might be some black staining visible. This is usually due to contact with steel forks which will mean the oak may need sanding depending on how much finishing the timbers need.
Most of our oak timbers are cut from green stocks but we obtain seasoned and air dried logs where required. If you require structurally graded oak then please state this when requesting your estimates, we would also need to know the grade of structural oak required.
In some of the attached images an oak bridge can be seen at different stages of construction. One of our established customers approached us with plans and a detailed cutting sheet for a proposed tender. The project was all in green oak. Because of the oak volume required we were able to select from a wider range of mills who could cut the volume and quality of oak required for this build.
From tender to acceptance seemed remarkably short and the instructions were issued to the French mill responsible for cutting the oak. The timber was delivered on schedule, further machining and finishing was then undertaken by the customer here in Devon. All joints were cut and pre-assembled before the bridge was finally assembled.
