Moisture Resistant MDF is used as a substitute for softwoods and hardwoods. It is also used as a panel product in non-stressed applications. It can be used for kitchen furniture, bathroom furniture, architectural mouldings, skirting boards, architraves, window boards, flooring and general interior joinery.
MR is suitable for interior humid conditions and is manufactured in accordance with EN 622, part 5.
Moisture Resistant MDF must be sealed, primed and painted on all surfaces prior to installation, especially when placed next to damp plaster. MR MDF is not suitable for external applications.
MR MDF is normally stocked in the following thicknesses
Other sizes – 9mm, 22mm and 25mm – are available to special order. Delivery is normally to Devon and Cornwall
MDF sheets are an engineered wood product, usually sold in 2440mm x 1220mm sheets. It is often encountered as standard MDF, Moisture Resistant MDF (MR) and Veneered MDF. This board material is traditionally used for interior furniture, fittings and trims because it is relatively easier to machine, trim and paint.
MDF is manufactured using sawdust or shavings of wood, dried and combined with resin and wax. Compressed with heat and pressure, into rigid shapes which are then sanded and cut to size.
These MDF sheets have a consistent appearance, a smooth look but without the knots and splits found in real timber. MDF fluctuates less in thickness when compared to wood or ply.
MR MDF is moisture resistant, not waterproof. It can be used in damp areas but not used outdoors. MDF will absorb water quite easily, which will then lead to swollen and dis-coloured boards. Plywood is not immune to water damage but will hold up better over time.
