WATER REPELLENCY – PRESSURE TREATED TIMBERS FOR SHEDS, GARDEN BUILDINGS AND ANIMAL HOUSING
Pressure preservative treatment is designed to prevent wood decay and insect attack to give softwood construction and landscaping timber products an extended and low maintenance service life. The treatment is not intended to perform as a waterproofing agent.
When using pressure treated cladding timbers in the construction of sheds or garden buildings the following guidelines should be followed to help prevent any water ingress.
- The Timber Research and Development Association (TRADA) recommends a 16-19mm nominal thickness for cladding timbers.
- Nail heads should only be driven marginally below the surface of the cladding timbers.

Once your deck is built you want it to last as long as possible.
Keeping your WPC Decking clean is an important aspect in the after-care of decking, as well as keeping it free from organic matter which could potentially lead to the decay of the structure.
Once fitted, we do not recommend:
- Dragging furniture or plant pots across the decking
- Dropping heavy items onto the deck (such as large plant pots, trees, BBQs, furniture etc)
- Items with metal feet should have suitable material between them and the decking to avoid scratching or damaging the deck.
- Using corrosive or strong chemical treatments such as bleach
WPC composite decking is recommended to be cleaned at least twice a year, ideally in warm and dry weather conditions. This will prevent the build-up of dirt and organic matter from causing damage to the decking. Cleaning more

Hardwood decking procedure
Anyone with a hardwood deck can follow pretty much the same advice. However because of the density of hardwood it is recommended to leave the boards for 3 to 6 months before treatment.
While we can’t stop the rain we can help slow down its effects. Timber will absorb moisture from the surrounding air, meaning timber tends to expand when wet and shrink when dry. In the summer months this can lead to deck board cracking on the surface. Applying decking oil on a regular basis will help inhibit the growth of algae. This should reduce the risk of slipping and keeps the boards looking fresh.
We also stock Rustins Textured Decking Oil this can be applied on new or old decking, in areas which have become slippery.

Looking After Your Decking
Decking oil serves several purposes. Any exterior surface can become slippery, especially where there has been a build up of algae. This is one of the reasons we recommend customers gently wash and then brush their decking twice a year. We stock a range of Osmo, Rustins and Liberon decking oil products which penetrate into the timber to help preserve the timber. They also provide a surface coating to reduce the absorption of moisture and UV damage.
Cleaning and maintenance
A recommended product of ours for decking cleaning and maintenance is Osmo’s Wood Reviver Power gel. This Product can help restore a wood deck back to its original colour by deeply cleaning and penetrating the timber surface.
How to Clean the Deck
- Dampen the surface of the decking with water
- Apply the W
