Featheredge boards and fencing

We have always stocked feather-edge boards in large quantities, selected lengths and a choice of widths. Now, because demand has shifted more to 150mm width, we have made additions to our range.  So, lets recap on where we are.

Featheredge width 125mm – making it simpler

The 125mm feather-edge boards are being phased out so we can focus even more on stock lengths of 150mm width.  That means our stocks of 125mm at 1.2 metre, 1.65 metre and 1.8 metre are now obsolete.

Of course, the installer can still overlap the featheredge boards by differing amounts if required.

Featheredge width 150mm – increasing the range of lengths

This is the real winner, we can now stock even more feather-edge lengths and hopefully reduce the number of cuts that are required during a fence installation.  As from late May 2025 the new lengths of 1.25 metre, 1.35 metres and 2.1 metres were added to our extensive range.

So, without any timber cross-cuts the fencing installer can choose from a range of lengths that includes 1.05 metres, 1.2 metres, 1.35 metres, 1.5 metres, 1.65 metres, and 1.8 metres.  Add to this the new height, 2.1 metres, which sits in the featheredge fencing and featheredge cladding families. Planning permission may be required for any 2.0 metre plus hight fences, your local Planning Authority or the planning portal should be able to offer more advice.

Feather edge for cladding

Most of our shorter feather-edge boards are primarily for customer’s fencing applications. However Longer lengths of 150mm width are also stocked: 2.1 metres; 2.4 metres; 3.0 metres; 3.6 and 4.8 metres. These are mainly intended for cladding on timber-frame buildings.

With featheredge slats most fencing installers allow a 25mm overlap when constructing the fence.  Therefore, they would need 8 boards to the metre for 150mm boards. When cladding a building the normal procedure is for vertical studwork with the feather-edge slats clad  horizontally. Depending on the building contents and location you might increase the overlap to 35mm or 40mm to reduce any potential water ingress.

Featheredge Capping and accessories

When planning your fence, you might want to enhance the appearance with featheredge capping.  Stock lengths are 3.6 metre in either rebated or flat-bottomed profile. Both profiles are machined from kiln-dried redwood timber to minimise warping or splitting.

Another option is to fit sawn timber gravel board at the bottom of the fence.  This gravel board helps prolong the service-life of the featheredge boards by reducing the vertical slats from absorbing too much ground water.
